A Global Future for a British Institution

The Tote has always had a central role to play in horseracing and under our stewardship we want the Tote to help ensure a sustainable and successful future for the sport we love.

While the betting landscape has changed significantly over the last one hundred years, the Tote continues to provide customers with a safe place to bet and return much-needed funds to  horseracing.

The Tote supports horseracing in a number of important ways:

  • The Tote pays the statutory Horserace Betting Levy of 10% of horseracing gross profits.

  • Along with the levy, the Tote is paying an additional £50 million over seven years to racecourses.

  • The Tote’s pool is helping generate significant new revenues for the sport via World Pool which sees pool betting operators from around the globe commingle pools operated by the Hong Kong Jockey Club to create a “World Pool”.  This results in enormous liquidity, with a multi-million-pound betting experience and better value for the customer, along with increased media rights for the sport. World Pool has contributed over £50 million to British and Irish racing since it was launched in 2019. For more information on World Pool please visit https://worldpool.hkjc.com/  and follow @WorldPool.

  • The Tote supports the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) Owner Sponsorship Scheme, with nearly 1,400 horses currently in the scheme. This is an immense benefit to ROA members, enabling them to recover the VAT on racing-related expenditure, which benefits British racing to the tune of millions of pounds a year.

  • Each year the Tote undertakes exciting sponsorship at several racecourses and makes huge efforts to activate those sponsorships with a race day enhancing experience for customers.

  • The Tote supports racing charities including Greatwood, the Injured Jockeys Fund, Racing to School, and Racing Welfare in 2023 to name just a few.

Alongside supporting horseracing financially, the Tote is working with several jockey ambassadors, including Danny Mullins, Tom Marquand, and Brodie Hampson to tell racing’s most fascinating stories to new and exciting fans of the sport.
